INSIGHT #3: Growth Comes From Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone

A final insight I gained from my experience as a basketball manager is that meaningful growth occurs when individuals step outside their comfort zones. Before this experience, I believed that growth happened gradually through repetition and consistency within familiar environments. I avoided situations that felt uncertain or uncomfortable, preferring to operate within areas where I already felt confident. However, this internship challenged me to engage with unfamiliar responsibilities and situations, which ultimately became the most valuable source of my personal development.

At the beginning, I often hesitated when faced with unfamiliar tasks or situations. I focused on performing well in known responsibilities rather than taking initiative in new areas. However, as I began helping rookies and taking on additional responsibilities, I noticed that discomfort often preceded learning. These moments required me to adapt quickly, think independently, and trust my judgment.

Over time, I became more comfortable with uncertainty. Each new challenge helped me develop confidence in my ability to learn and adjust. I realized that avoiding discomfort limited my growth, while engaging with it expanded my capabilities. This shift in mindset allowed me to become more proactive and adaptable.

This insight connects to PHIL 109 through existentialist ideas of self-development and responsibility. Existentialist philosophy emphasizes that individuals define themselves through choices and actions rather than predetermined roles. By choosing to step outside my comfort zone, I actively participated in shaping my own development. Additionally, this connects to virtue ethics, where growth occurs through repeated practice of courageous and responsible action, even in uncertain situations.

Ultimately, this insight changed how I view challenges. I now see discomfort not as something to avoid, but as an opportunity for growth and self-improvement.
